Interesting part about the unions. Most of the BIG shops, like Toyota as an example pay pretty much the same package as the UAW shops in order to keep the union out. So the actual cost benefits are minimal but the perceived hassle benefit is improved. That is a tossup I think.

There are some unions that are very good and work very well within the manufacturing environment. They do a very good job of balancing worker's rights with manufacturing responsibilities.

In most cases, the current UAW is that very way. It simply has a bad reputation based on many of its actions and costs associated with it from the 1970s. If I was to build up a company from scratch, with a clean whiteboard, I would have no aversion whatsoever to having a union represent the workers. If the company management does its job right, the interface is pretty seamless.


Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.
