My wife and I will visit San Francisco and Hearst Castle. Can someone recommend some great steak house in the area?

There's a few at the airport...requires you to fly to a state that actually breeds cows for beef though.

I know it's not in your area, but if you're by that way. Pomona Valley Mining Co. Steak House. Great Ribeye. It's right off San Bernardino Freeway.

If cost is not important, there is of course a Ruth's Chris in the City, very, very good but pricey even if you order carefully and don't have wine ($50/person and up). Very upscale, mixed clientele, classy place, but no formal dining dress code. This is my place of choice when I want a really, really good steak.
A bit more relaxed on price (unless you order Kobe) is Mortons, also no formal dress code, and Bob's Steak & Chop house (save room for dessert at this one, they have outstanding choices).
Down the peninsula off 101 near the San Carlos Airport (and an exit past a huge MB dealership) is Izzy's Steaks and Chops. Not as good as the other three but relaxed atmosphere and much more affordable.

For seafood and wonderful Italian dishes (best pesto I've ever had) and some great views is Tarantino's on the wharf (McBear seemed to enjoy his dinner there, perhaps he'll chime in). I know you didn't ask about this, but it's my favorite restaurant in the City, and since you have to go to the wharf anyway...

Hope that gives you a few realistic options, do enjoy your trip!

Don't know about steaks (and since you're from Memphis, I've got to chime in somewhat with Q's smartass comment), but if you're planning on visiting Napa Valley, might as well call ahead and see if you can get a reservation at the French Laundry

PM cascade, he lives out that way, and knows all the great places.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Avoid the chains such as Mortons, Chris, etc! Stick w/ the one-of-a-kind restaurants that are known for their steaks. There are at least a dozen in SF. The best way to decide is to Google them, then read-up, and make your own decision.

If you're into seafood, and even if you're not, the best Ablone steak in the world can be found at Tadish's Grill in the financial district. It is one of the oldest restaurants in SF and well worth the $$$!
