They have been going up for the past 18 months. My travel receipts from same hotel and same restaurant over the period show about 15% increase, more for airfare.

Food prices went up due to transportation costs but I notice they have not yet moved back down since those costs dropped.

Talking to the owner of a restaurant today about flour prices. They spiked at $45 per 50#bag just six months or so ago [when I ended up with a truck load in my shop at the lower rate]. Those prices have now moved back down to $22 but I notice his prices have not gone down on the menu.

Ain't that the truth. And where they haven't raised prices, I'm noticing they're reducing quantities. Once upon a time, a half-gallon of ice cream was a half a gallon. Then it's been 1.75 quarts for awhile, and now it's suddenly 1.5 quarts. Sneaky!

And tuna used to be 6.5 oz, then 6 oz. Now I notice the good Bumble Bee stuff is 5 oz.

Soup's getting smaller and smaller too. Where does it end?

The last straw was the roach coach hiking prices recently. Given that commodities are down and recession is anear, it's surprising.

About 10 years ago I used to be able to budget $6 a day or so for lunch...now I pretty much budget $12 a day.

I think a big part of it is drink prices. Soda/tea used to be like $0.99, now it's common for places to charge $2.49 for a non-water. Most people don't even think, and never ask what it costs. The waiter/waitress comes up and says "what would you like to drink" and you're happy to be served that quickly.

While all acknowledge that price increases are at a record pace, no one seems willing to admit that the recent oil prices had a significant impact on this, in spite of the fact that transportation costs were doubled. I, personally, have witnessed our manufacturing materials increase over 30% in the last 9 months and no relief is in sight, since all the paper suppliers, ink suppliers, solvent suppliers, plastics suppliers are content holding up the prices as long as they can.

Food prices were also impacted by this absolutely insipid ethanol policy, which I can only hope our President-Elect helps to turn into something sensible.
