The BMI index is not an accurate chart for everyone. When I was riding 4000 miles a year and had a measured body fat % of 15% based on lean body mass floating tests. At 6'0" and 218#, at the time I had a 50 chest and 35 waist and 29 quads.
The BMI figure for me at that time was 30 which said I was obese.
I also took a physical that year for insurance. Since the BMI was their calculation of choice I was put in a high risk plan. While on the phone I was told of their system. I offered to ride my bike from Lexington to Indianapolis, come into their office and strip on top of their desk to let them see what I looked like.
NOW, on the other hand, I come closer to that 30 number thanks to my last HALO jump and much less exercise. Oops.
Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.
