Studies Should they be used as evidence in a posting?

Why do we quote studies in out postings? Members choose just to not believe them if they go against their personal beliefs. What say you?

I think that studies CAN be a very good source of information, understanding of a subject and furthering an opinion.

But studies, depending on WHO DOES THEM can be very misleading and intentionally biased.

One of the best examples of this is the Competitive Enterprise Institute, which positions itself as a "thinktank" but in reality is very little more than an extension of Exxon's PR Department. They have been invited for years to speak before congress on Energy and Global Climate Change issues, always at the request of Sen Inhofe, also apparently an extension of Exxon's PR Department, at least if you look at his funding [as well as CEIs].

The best term papers are constructed roughly in a following manner:

Introduction
Thesis

Body:
1 example (evidence in support of thesis)

2 counter-example (evidence against thesis)

3 counter-counter-example (further evidence that negates counter-evidence)

Reestablishment of thesis

Conclusion

Term paper, in a way, is a prolonged torture invented by schoolteachers to keep their students to experience agony over something that can be conveyed in a paragraph or two, but must be presented using minimum of 10,000 words.

For a post on a forum which does not carry weight in one's GPA, there is no need to elaborate but a source may bolster one's POV and that is sufficient.

counterexample, instead, is posted by those who disagree.

some of us choose to read the sources, some of us don't. Better quality threads often resemble an ongoing rally of informative sources and appropriate counter-sources without getting ugly.

I thought you were highlighting the futility embodied by fretting over the value of studies in making one's argument here, given that we're all taken to discussing ass hygiene and laundry habits at the drop of a hat.

Hey, a study in futility!
