Buying a Used Truck in Utah...hah ha haaa!

I decided to purchase another road machine because I need or think I need that is a pickup truck,

I kinda figured since this is not the primary car (it will be road machine number 7) that I will go out and find an nice preowned one since hey! its a truck and I plan to haul firewood and take it out to the Moabs so investing in a new one would be kinda of a waste...

Well I started to look around the Entire state of Utah.... at first I started looking at used car dealers just to get a feel of the market here....

Okeee! some sweet prices for some real nice looking trucks (Toyota Tacoma) with 4 wheel drive and manual transmision along with a V6 engine.

It at forst seemed like just about every dealer around has a few kicking around for sale and the prices for a 2006 are really attractive! ...........then I ran the Vin number checks (NADA and CarFax) ........

Holy shit! what a total pile of crap! ........Salvage Titles, Flood Damage Titles, Branded Titles from Stolen/Recovered units by the dozen!

What I found out is the damn butthole dealers do not have to tell you up-front about the branded title however it must be in writting on the purchase contract and thats is all.

After talking with two different folks that did not do the home-work before making the big buy.. they both said that they did not notice the branded title until long after... one not until he went to sell the car and the other not until she got the title in the mail.

However when I read the purchase contract yup there it was written right there on it... and both said the same thing that the sales person never said a word and when the contract was put up in front of them by that time they were "blinded by the light" and did not read the entire thing.

This state is the first time I have ran into it like this.....

So WTF! in NY, State any Title issues was the first thing that they Had to disclose... and the Dealer would avoid "branded" title units and simply would not put them on the lot.

Here in Utah it seems like just about every dealer I have looked at has several of them. why the F ing mutters!

Kentucky used to be that way but now full disclosure is required. Most states have gone to that. It means that states like Utah are getting all the crap.

While carfax does not do a very good job of providing wreck histories as not everyone turns them in, they do usually pick up title information quickly. It is worth it just for that.

When I buy a truck, I usually get an older one from an individual. My current truck has 355,000+ miles. I bought it for $700 about 8 years ago and it's the most reliable vehicle I've got. 5 inches of sleet or 2 feet of snow and it will go right through it. If I ever get stoopid and run into a ditch and total it, I'm not out much.

My main driver is an 18 year old Camry. The previous owner had put a new steering rack and timing belt in it for $800 about 6 months before I bought it for $800. Another $500 in parts and it purrs right along. Basically, I've paid for the parts on a free car.

Now, my 380SL came from a dealer but I've dealt with him for years. He's one of the few used car dealers (or dealers period) that I trust.

What he said, get stuff used and fix them. It's frustrating sometimes but in the long run you will not spend as much for the privilege of getting a car that no one else farted in.

I need to start taking the Camera and take some pictures of some of the total pile of shits that I have looked at......... Crap one I looked at today it was listed as Private seller ... 2005 Tacoma 4x4 truck in "near" mint shape for only $18,900

I Called the seller first and asked the questions and decided to go for a drive to see it since it was only a 30 minute drive (speed limits here are 75 mph)

I got there and sure there it was! a White Toyota Tacoma pickup..... with a cracked front window, rear tailgate missing, sound like shit when started up and get this! It was a 1999 not 2005 like they said.... I told them I would give em $500 bucks for it course it was turned down and then I told them learn to tell the truth.....
