I watched

a guy put 4 pats of butter and 4 packages of strawberry jelly into his grits this morning.

Then he ate it.

When I was a kid, I liked ketchup, put it on fries, burgers, sometimes a little on eggs, meatloaf, even hot dogs, etc. My uncle used to chide me about it, sometimes he'd say, "There you go again, puttin' on that Okie gravy".

One night we stopped in a Sambo's (remember those?) and were having something to eat, can't remember if we ordered breakfast but I probably did, I really liked the Silver Dollar Sambo Cakes. We always sat at the counter (my uncle preferred it, and for some reason it made me feel grown up) and there was a guy in a booth not too far away. He was sort of in my line of sight when I looked in my uncle's direction and at some point he had the ketchup bottle in his hand, which caught my attention.

I tapped my uncle on the arm and motioned towards the guy, and my uncle turned his head in time to see him just finishing pouring. We watched as he put the lid back on the ketchup bottle, and then the took his knife and fork and took a large bite of pancakes, covered in ketchup.

So far as I recall, my uncle never, ever gave me a hard time about ketchup after that.

The great thing about grits is that you can put almost anything in the world in it, and it tastes great.

Hmmm... I like cheese, butter, pepper, hot sauce and bacon.

Years ago, I was dating a cute little Cajun gal in Louisiana. One day she fixed me grits cajun style. I slurped a big tablespoon in one gulp. It took about 5 minutes to get my voice and breath back. Cajun butter, extra hot, is not something you gulp fast.

That's just nasty. Butter, salt and pepper. Or shrimp and grits. Grits aren't supposed to be sweet that's what cream of wheat is for.

I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way.

Is that what I've been doing wrong? I just eat the grits they bring out. Well, a bite of them, until I realize how abhorrent and downright British the food is, and I leave it there.

You're supposed to add stuff to it.

Sooo, is making it sweet a fool's errand? What should the grits end up tasting like?
