The "Precondition" Conundrum

This hysteria about not meeting with some of the leaders from countries we don't get along with in the world without "preconditions" is getting completely out of hand. When asked what the preconditions might be in her recent interview with Brian Williams this is what she had to say:

" WILLIAMS: Governor Palin, yesterday you tied this notion of an early test to the new president. Would this notion of precondition –

PALIN: Right.

WILLIAMS: — that you both have been hammering the Obama campaign on. What — first of all, what in your mind is a precondition?

PALIN: You have to have some diplomatic strategy going into a meeting with someone like Ahmadinejad or Kim Jong-il, one of these dictators that would seek to destroy America or her allies. It is so naive and so dangerous for a presidential candidate to just proclaim that they would be willing to sit down with a– a leader like Ahmadinejad and just talk about the problems, the issues that are facing them. So that — that’s — that’s some ill-preparedness right there."

Here is the link to the actual video:

Now, how can someone give those speeches over and over with that tone of voice, all the while having no clue what she is talking about?

Preconditions in the context of Obama's so often quoted remark were defined by the Bush Administration when citing what various leaders would have to agree to as a "precondition" to any official contact with the Administration/State Department and essentially involved conceding any and all points of contention with the United States. Things like "Iran has to agree to give up their initiative to develop nuclear weapons before the United States will meet to discuss anything with them" as a precondition to meeting with them when the topic of greatest interest is getting them to negotiate an agreement to give up their nuclear weapons program were utter nonsense and defined the basis for the "meeting without pre-conditions" Obama promised.

Palin is a bonehead. And, with McCain sitting right next to her and unable to offer any explanation, it seems he is equally inept. Jim

Sadly, there are probably people who still haven't thought this item through and believe that Obama would pay for airfare and open the front door to the White House himself when Ahmadinejad came knocking, like it's a buddy coming in from out of town on late notice.

You'd think as much time as they spent in the Straight Talk Express together, they'd be a little more in-sync. Unless of course one or both of them are in so far over their heads that they can't even ACT competent.

Sorry, I'm supposed to be done with this kind of stuff for a while. That nap felt great.
