We look for things like felony convictions, serial DUI, theft, repeated firings from part-time work, repeated delinquencies on credit, bankruptcies, general or dishonorable discharge from the military. Things like that. While many of those items would not be a deal breaker, depending on number of them and severity, they are taken into account on the "character" and "reliability" part of the decision making. We have employees working with clients $10Million dollar systems, often unsupervised and trust is very important.
Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.
