Well, with a couple of neat little utilities freely downloadable, I can listen to every packet that travels between your laptops and your access point using only what I have for a wireless access card, or worst-case, a high-gain antenna made from a BNC connector and a Pringles can. Even if you use WEP, I can break the keys in a couple of minutes by just listening to traffic - you never even know I'm there, and I don't have to be using your internet connection. I will then parse through the packet captures and look for interesting things in the decodes, like HTTP "POST" commands and other goodies, and figure out passwords you enter to places which are unsecured - like BWOT - because chances are you use the same ID and password at more than one location. I'll also know everyplace you visit, even if you do go to SSL-enabled sites, which saves me lots of time figuring out where you bank, shop, where your kid goes to school, what kind of porn you like, etc.
If I'm really sick, I'll get on your access point as another node - you probably won't notice - and bypass that nifty firewall feature on your modem or "router", and infect your systems with malware that captures keystrokes and other neat information from the places we know applications like Quicken saves them, and forwards it to me on-demand. You'll never even know it was there, and the next thing you know, one month you'll get gigantic bills from your credit card companies and your bank balance will be zero, and maybe your kid won't come out of school one day.
Don't broadcast your SSID. Use WPA2 and a strong, complicated key with lots of alphanumeric characters. That will at least make someone really work hard to get YOUR info, versus your idiot neighbors who haven't done jack shit, because that's too much effort relative to an unprotected WAP.
