Colin Powell set to kick McCain/Palin in the ass?

Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse

When Colin Powell turns off his TV after the final presidential debate, he will have learned everything he is going to learn about the candidates vying to succeed his former boss, George W. Bush. Powell has made it clear that he has been thinking about an endorsement for a long time but wanted to hear more from the candidates before making his choice. It now seems beyond doubt that Colin Powell will endorse Barack Obama and thereby hammer the final nail in the coffin of the Republican campaign to hold onto the White House.

The recent ugliness of the McCain-Palin rally audiences cannot be lost on Colin Powell. And Powell is not one to ignore a 14 point lead in a New York Times poll. But most important for Powell and the press will be his explicit rejection of the Bush-McCain approach to Iraq, Iran and the rest of the world.

Powell's endorsement will be perfectly timed to dominate a news cycle or two. It will give Obama the one thing he still needs more of--credibility as Commander-In-Chief. And Sarah Palin's speechwriters will be hard pressed to come up with a condescending quip about it.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address

Powell: Stevens' Character Is 'Sterling'
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell Takes the Stand in Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens' Corruption Trial
By JASON RYAN
Oct. 10, 2008

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell testified Friday at the ongoing corruption trial of Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska, calling him "a trusted individual."

Powell appeared as a character witness, describing his 25-year relationship with Stevens, 84, the longest-serving Republican in the U.S. Senate.

Prosecutors say Stevens lied on financial disclosure forms to conceal $250,000 in gifts, but he has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Powell testified from the witness stand that when he was working as a senior military assistant to Caspar Weinberger, secretary of defense during the Reagan administration, he often dealt with Stevens for military appropriations issues on Capitol Hill.

"I got to know him extremely well," Powell said. aid.

Describing troop reductions after the end of the Cold War, Powell said he had extensive discussions with Stevens about military resources based in Alaska.

"He fights for his people and what's always in the best interest of the United States," Powell said.

Asked by lead defense attorney Brendan Sullivan if he could describe Stevens' character and integrity, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and secretary of state described them as, "in a word ... sterling."

"If you made a deal with Ted Stevens you knew it was good," Powell said. "[He] never would do anything that was improper."

Prosecutors briefly cross-examined Powell, asking him if he had ever been to Stevens' Girdwood, Alaska, home, which is at the center of the case. Government attorneys contend one of Stevens' supporters paid for the massive renovation project to the home, a claim the defense denies.

Powell said he had never been to the home.

Powell and Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Alaska, have served as character witnesses as Stevens makes his case that he did nothing improper when he and his wife renovated the Alaska home. Inouye took the stand Thursday.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, could also testify in the case. Other defense witnesses Friday focused on work and payments made by the Stevenses.

On Thursday, the defense entered testimony about the value of sled dog runts that were given to Stevens by friends.

The prosecution has alleged that Stevens did not accurately claim the value of the dogs on his Senate financial disclosure forms.

Character witnesses are in a kind of damned if they do/ damned if they don't position. What if Stevens beats the rap?

It would be nice to see a Powell endorsement, followed by Obama announcing he will appoint him as Sec Def. That would knock the shit out of the GOP's campaign.

True and I would love to see the scenario you describe above but Stevens has been dirty for years and years and I cannot believe Powell is unaware of it..........

I have tremendous respect for General Powell. It is unfortunate that his endorsement will carry less weight today than it would have 6 years ago. The taint of that UN speech will follow him to his grave, which is a gross injustice to a man who spent his life serving his country honourably.

Thank you, I feel exactly the same way. The Bush gang smeared and undermined this good man.
If I were Obama I would try to get him in my fold to not only try to restore his reputation back but because he is competent... and loyal to our country.
He will bring much needed healing in our arm forces and hopefully line up the mission of our defense department to what is truly needed to defend our country and its real interests. The fact that Powell got injured by those no good sons of bitches is a great lesson for him about who and what to trust.

Oh puleese -- Powell allowed himself to be coerced into doing something he didn't want to do. Yes, he was a victim, but he wasn't an innocent victim.
