BARONE: The coming liberal thugocracy

"I need you to go out and talk to your friends and talk to your neighbors," Barack Obama told a crowd in Elko, Nev. "I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them and get in their face." Actually, Obama supporters are doing a lot more than getting into people's faces. They seem determined to shut people up.

That's what Obama supporters, alerted by campaign e-mails, did when conservative Stanley Kurtz appeared on Milt Rosenberg's WGN radio program in Chicago. Mr. Kurtz had been researching Mr. Obama's relationship with unrepentant Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers in Chicago Annenberg Challenge papers in the Richard J. Daley Library in Chicago - papers that were closed off to him for some days, apparently at the behest of Obama supporters.

Obama fans jammed WGN's phone lines and sent in hundreds of protest e-mails. The message was clear to anyone who would follow Mr. Rosenberg's example. We will make trouble for you if you let anyone make the case against The One.

Other Obama supporters have threatened critics with criminal prosecution. In September, St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch and St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce warned citizens that they would bring criminal libel prosecutions against anyone who made statements against Mr. Obama that were "false." I had been under the impression that the Alien and Sedition Acts had gone out of existence in 1801-'02. Not so, apparently, in metropolitan St. Louis. Similarly, the Obama campaign called for a criminal investigation of the American Issues Project when it ran ads highlighting Mr. Obama's ties to Mr. Ayers.

These attempts to shut down political speech have become routine for liberals. Congressional Democrats sought to reimpose the "fairness doctrine" on broadcasters, which until it was repealed in the 1980s required equal time for different points of view. The motive was plain: to shut down the one conservative-leaning communications medium, talk radio. Liberal talk-show hosts have mostly failed to draw audiences, and many liberals can't abide having citizens hear contrary views. ...

Vandalism of GOP office: 'Republican means slavery'...

Vandals spray-painted the words “Republican means slavery” on the door of the York County GOP campaign headquarters overnight Friday.

Party volunteers called police after discovering the message when they arrived at the office on Rock Hill’s Oakland Avenue. The vandals also stole about 45 candidate signs from the front yard and spray-painted over a banner that carried a picture of Republican presidential nominee John McCain. Their messages included lettering and symbols sometimes used by gangs.

The culprits could face charges on petty larceny and damage to property, said Rock Hill police Sgt. Roderick Stinson. No one appears to have entered the office. ...

Funny Jayhawk, when Right Wing Talk Radio does the same thing, you never bitch.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

I have to laugh but find this hard to laugh about. But if I do manage to laugh, maybe it won't bother me so much.

Your ideas behind "fair and balanced" and "hearing contrary views" are an appeal to allow bullshit to be taken seriously, to sort of give bullshit the benefit of the doubt. All bullshit is good shit until proven to be bad shit, or some other similar concept. For unsupportable, distorted views of "conservative ideas" to be given equal footing with ideas that are based on verifiable facts and logic is a degradation of the intellect of the nation. It is the primary force behind bullshit behind ideas like "creationism" should be taught as an option to the theory of evolution, or as an equally valid concept. That handicaps the next generation. Because in the global economy, there won't be any Chinese or Indian kids being burdened with such mind numbing bullshit. That so many Americans actually believe this bullshit is a sign we have already managed to damage the minds of several generations of America by teaching them bullshit is the same as real, supportable, scientific method tested theories of how the world works, if you just believe it.

While much of politics is pure bullshit, and the ultimate test is an election which can pit a truthful man against a bullshitter and have the outcome based not on the truth but on how well the bullshitter bullshitted, the idea that it is somehow un-American or "unfair" to ask the bullshitter to back up his bullshit is, well, un-American. The founding fathers were the intellectual equals of any group in any part of the world. That, sadly, is just not the case today. We have been dumbed down by believing the bullshit being sold by those with something to gain. Which is obvious. They are the ones who have the most to lose if America stops believing in bullshit.

So, Jaybaugh, how about you post up some of these ideas you have and then justify them with facts so we can run them through a fact checking, logic checking and reality checking process? I know, your are a gadget of AM talk radio and will stick to posting bullshit and pissing and moaning when someone suggests it really is just bullshit. Jim

This is what Liberals are all about. They deem something written as "not worthy" or not intellectual enough so therefore it is ok to silence what ever it is. Funny though...it seems everything that comes out in opposition to the point of view that liberals hold is "not worthy" because the mere fact that someone would exercise common sense in the antithesis to most things they think. How very convenient.

Seems like the only people that want to silence any kind of speech is liberals. You never hear Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh or anyone else calling for the end of someone's right to free speech. Funny...I wonder why that is?

An utterly incoherent post. How does what you posted even remotely pertain to what Jim posted?

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please.
