Why American Cars Suck

Just saw the following commercial on TV and I was struck by laziness, incompetence and stupidity stemming from lack of research (hey, pandagirl, you paying attention?)

nice visuals, nice song, but completely inappropriate if one wants to sell a car (circuits dead? tin can?)
YouTube - Cat Power :: "Space Oddity" (David Bowie cover)

Space Oddity:
Ground control to major tom
Ground control to major tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on

Ground control to major tom
Commencing countdown, engines on
Check ignition and may gods love be with you

Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five,
Four, three, two, one, liftoff

This is ground control to major tom
You've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now its time to leave the capsule if you dare

This is major tom to ground control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet earth is blue
And theres nothing I can do

Though Im past one hundred thousand miles
Im feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell me wife I love her very much she knows

Ground control to major tom
Your circuits dead, theres something wrong
Can you hear me, major tom?
Can you hear me, major tom?
Can you hear me, major tom?
Can you....

Here am I floating round my tin can
Far above the moon
Planet earth is blue
And theres nothing I can do.

Lesson not learnt from Chevy Nova exported to Latin American markets.

Yes and a while back I thought that some of the lyrics to 'The Story' as used by GM were a strange and ironic choice:

YouTube - "I was made for you" Olympics GM Commerical with Brandi Carlile

The Story :
All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true...I was made for you
I climbed across the mountain tops
Swam all across the ocean blue
I crossed all the lines and I broke all the rules
But baby I broke them all for you
Because even when I was flat broke
You made me feel like a million bucks
You do
I was made for you
You see the smile that's on my mouth
It's hiding the words that don't come out
And all of my friends who think that I'm blessed
They don't know my head is a mess

No, they don't know who I really am
And they don't know what
I've been through like you do
And I was made for you...
All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true...I was made for you

For years, the big three have coasted along with the unyielding axiom that no matter what worthless piece of shit they build, there'll be x+1 douchebags who can't wait to leverage credit in order to own it--case and point, the Hummer, Expedition and every Cadillac built since the '50's

Yeah, I thought about him as I wrote that, but my loathing of GM's dreck was richly earned over decades of uninspired production, not one man's misplaced obsession

I wonder who comes up with the names for vehicles. It's not just American companies either. The Chevy Nova was named that because in Latin it means "new". A little Latina gal I used to date was from Puerto Rico and she laughed whenever she saw one driving as in street idion in P.R. No Va means "It doesn't run". The Virago motorcycle translates as "grouchy woman". Then again, "Fresca" is a nick name for lesbians in East L.A. and other hispanic areas from what I've heard.

MR2 sounds like mierde in french. M err deux.

While I will concede that American car companies had some catching up to do through the 70's and 80's they are some of the greatest cars in the world today. GM makes the highest horsepower per fuel consumed engines in the world. It's nothing short of amazing being able to make 505hp and maintain 25mpg with great reliability. The biggest shortcoming I see in the big three these days is the lackluster looks of their entry and mid-level cars. Cadillacs, Corvettes, 300C, MKZ, are all very nice cars but who wants to be seen driving around in a new Impala, Malibu, etc.
