Drilling would actually have larger impact short term than what you have been told.
The average offshore well takes 6 months of work from seismology to drilling, logging, and production. It then produces 12k BBLs per day on average.
That equals 41 wells to offset the OPEC 500,000 BBL cut that they say is coming.
The issue that has always hammered us id refining. No new refineries in the past 33 years tends to put a strain on supply such as the case in the Southeast US now. 1 month of offline status on the gulf coast and we are out of gas. Why that does not scare the absolute crap out of people is beyond me. We not only need drilling, we need the refineries along with it (and by the way, ethanol is not the answer).
