I quit drinking 'em years ago. Aspartame is nasty stuff. If I want a coke, I'll just drink one every now and then.

Now that I am back in the Glorious South I have brought Iced Tea back into my diet, unsweetened for me. The tea doesn't have enough caffeine to be a problem. The three seem to cover all my needs.

Not on this computer. I will have more at home.

Google on Aspartame, Phenylalanine and Diet coke. Be prepared to read for a while. WebMD, Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical all have good info if I remember correctly.

Aspartame is 50% Phenylalanine, 40% Aspartic Acid, 10% Methanol (Wood Alcohol). Your body breaks this stuff down into Formaldehyde

Aspartic acid is an amino acid normally supplied by the foods we eat but can only be considered natural and harmless when consumed in combination with other amino acids. On its own, it causes aberrant neuronal firing and potential cell death.

A friend watched me drinking eight a day for three years. She sent me an email with six links [which I would need to fire up a computer with Lotus Notes to retrieve that note from 2001]. I went through the data, did some more research myself and just quit one day.

After a week of screaming caffeine and NutraSweet withdrawal headaches I felt much better [and started losing weight].

I got on the habit of so much Diet Coke while living in New York City because their Iced Tea pretty much SUCKS unless you eat at a very nice restaurant [$50+meals]. Afterwards I simply drank water or lemonade.

I once attended a Peter Lowe Success seminar and one speaker was a Doctor.
He had a top ten list of things not to consume.

near the top was Diet sodas.

He explained about the effects of the alternative sweeteners and told of true death stories attributed to them.

as for the rest of the list you can almost guess. Alcohol, coffee, Shell fish, etc....
