POLL: Troops backing McCain 68-23%...

Military Times poll: Troops backing McCain

By Brendan McGarry - Staff writer
Posted : Sunday Oct 5, 2008 9:46:06 EDT

Sen. John McCain enjoys overwhelming support from the military’s professional core, though race appears to be a decisive factor for career-oriented black service members, a Military Times survey of nearly 4,300 readers indicates.

McCain, R-Ariz., handily defeated Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., 68 percent to 23 percent in a voluntary survey of 4,293 active-duty, National Guard and reserve subscribers and former subscribers to Army Times, Navy Times, Marine Corps Times and Air Force Times.

Given the diatribes from military members here recently, I'm not surprised. I do know that they overwhelmingly supported Ron Paul over McCain during the primaries, in no small part because Paul would be using them to actually defend the country they swore to defend instead of turning them into a band of expensive mercenaries.

If you understood what was pumped into our combat troops heads when they are in theater you would easily understand that survey. Much of it is for their own good while they are in theater but it provides an unrealistic world view and in many ways overemphasizes the importance of military in solving world problems.

The fact that Obama is going to pull over twenty five points of the military vote is not exactly good news for McCain.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

I have to bet that a good number of Military wives and mothers, in the quiet of the voting booth will vote for the quickest way for their spouse and child to get home.

One of the most conservative woman I know, a 50 year old business owner hard core Republican told me that after the Palin debate, she had decided to change her mind and vote for Obama, she simply did not think Palin would be able to govern the country when McCain buys the farm. She begged me not to say a word of it to anyone. Makes you wonder how many of them are out there.

I wonder about how many wounded and crippled Iraq war veterans in Walter Reed Hospital and similar ones like that back Mc Cain?
