Sometimes nothin' make a real cool hand.

Newman started racing back in the 1970s in the IMSA series with Bob Sharp racing. He won the IMSA title in 1979 driving a Bob Sharp Z. I only raced against him twice in the early 70s, he was in a 510 and I was in a 914. When he won, which was often, he would never take pay choosing instead to be paid by his normal sponsor Budweiser in beer. The money always went to charity.

As he aged, he went to endurance racing and would be at the 24 Hours of Daytona and Sebring and Mid Ohio and other long races, first with Bob Sharp [his neighbor in Conn.] and later with his own team. His car number always became his AGE. He last raced LAST YEAR in Number 82. Just a few laps but...

When I gave the third place trophy at Mid Ohio in the CART World Series, he was there with his driver. He was a very hands on owner. Not just the guy that wrote checks and got his picture taken.

I have been very lucky to have met a bunch of cool people in my years. When asked who, I usually say Paul Newman first and then have to think a second about the rest.

When we would meet again at Habitat for Humanity builds and conferences, we would end up talking cars if I drove something interesting to the site. That was good until the break was over then it was back to work [that was in 1991-1992]. I don't know of a single person who has focused so much time and money and self on helping others. Between the Hole in the Wall Gang and Habitat and his other charities he taught how giving back is suppose to be done. THAT is what is going to be missed.

He should have gone into acting.

Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.

No!!!!! There can't be no Paul Newman. He was one of the best at every thing he did. And, the best looking man ever created with a personality and a giving spirit. It's just not right. It seems like God takes all of the best ones first. I guess he must have plans for him I'm sure he can use all the help he can get with all that is going on in the world. Another Icon is gone, I just hope the few we have left are around for many more years.

I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way.

I read a nice article about him this morning on; he was a true class act. When Playboy interviewed him about his being a sex symbol, he negated any inferences of playing around, quipping "Why go out for a hamburger when you have steak at home."

I can honestly say I can't remember ever seeing a movie of his in which I didn't enjoy his performance. He was a generous, kind soul whose passing leaves us a little worse-off. An amazing guy all around.

The last movie of his I saw was "Cars"; even his voice had powerful acting abilities.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)

Found two of the pictures I took before I was on the Phillips/Martin team ( I was a tag a long then) You know .....

These were on slides as I was very into the 35mm sildes at the time since they were very easy to develop and frame after that no more work required.
