The war, from a military officer prospective
TO ALL THE REPUBLICANS. The sad state of the economy is W's fault. Had the war in Iraq never taken place this current debacle would not have been so severe.
We just cannot afford 2 wars. Not only can we not afford them we haven't gotten anything out of them . If your going to start a war at least reap the benefits and natural resources but we didnt, we can't or we would be seen for the real reason of the iraq war.
War depresses people it dosen't boost anyones spirits, except for republicans. Nobody thinks "My cousin died today, that makes me want to buy a big screen tv" Someone knows someone who has died in Iraq or Afghanistan. It trickles down, even though it doesn't effect you directly it effects others. Who has been to a military full honor funeral? It makes you cry and it makes you really angry. When you see the airmans wife and 3 kids screaming over the casket of their dead father ,it hits you. This man did not die protecting freedom and liberty, this man died for absolutley fucking NOTHING.
I was there in 2004 with a friend and he just came back from his second tour and I asked him the difference, he said not much. I asked him how much less action there was. He said "Whatever improvements there are, they didn't take place around Balad." Baghdad might be better but north of there not so much from the 50 or so Amn, NCOs and officers I have talked to.
Name ONE thing that the Iraq war has done that has made america a better place.
It's not all doom and gloom. I was able to buy a 500k home for 300k. Thanks George! . Before you think oh they were rich and they just simply didn't want the home anymore. It was a short sale and they were not listed as the owners of the property and over 400k was still owed.
As I walk around in my unit I hear alot of political talk, much more than usual and I think the young crowd is much more supportive of the Obama ticket. Believe it or not I don't hear too much support for McCain. No one can dispute the fact that McCain is a hero and that he has sacrificed more than any presidential candidate in history. But one thing is for sure I have not heard any support for George W Bush. Even the older staunch Republican NCOs are swaying Democrat. Military strength is at an all time low. We went from 500k before 9/11 to 290k last month and more disturbing is the number of experienced NCOs leaving, willing to take a pay cut and head out into uncertainty just to stop the damage that deployments have done to their families . I can't speak for other branches, but reading the sensitive information regarding future budgets and manning levels as well as FMC rates and other aircraft related stats, things are going downhill. The people go out but don't come in at the same rate. The people that do come in are inexperienced and definitely are not what I consider the "cream of the crop" like the airman we used to get in the late 90s and early 00's.
Our sister unit is in Bagram right now fighting the warlords in the Afghan AOR. What should frighten the american public is the fact that our airplanes are flying with dangerous defects and reduced capabilites. If a 24 million dollar A10C is flying with severe defects imagine what defective equipment the army and marines are using. Budgets are cut, parts are hard to procure, Flying hours are increased, stress and fatigue on weapon components and airframes are stretching maintainers to the breaking point. I don't see how anyone can talk about a war in Iran and Georgia as an option when we are having trouble with our current wars. The a10 is 20-30 years old 16s are 10-40 years old F-15s are 20-40 years old and the F22 and F-35 program have all but come to a grinding halt.
That being said we are ready for anything, we are ready to provide airpower to combatant commanders anytime, anywhere. We have the best brightest and most diverse team, the best airplanes, the best technologies and the best mobility teams anywhere. I have seen it first hand on a daily basis and it is impressive.
I just can't figure out where the school of thought "Republicans are good for the military" comes from. You do not have to be a republican to be patriotic! You do not have to be a republican to serve your country. I think it would suprise the american public to find out how many military lean democrat and are the most outstanding, unwaivering, and commited troops.
