143 Days

I got this goofy, desperate piece of shit in e-mail from a friend who I keep forgetting doesn't get exposed to the breadth and depth of political news that I do.

There are lots of scared white folks clinging to their guns and religion, I can tell you.
Subject: 143 Days

You couldn't get a job at McDonalds and become district manager after - 143 days of experience.

You couldn't become chief of surgery after - 143 days of experience of being a surgeon.

You couldn't become a journeyman plumber after - 143 days of experience

You couldn't get a job as a teacher and be the superintendent after - 143 days of experience.

You couldn't join the military and become a General after a - 143 days of experience.

You couldn't get a job as a reporter and become the nightly news anchor after - 143 days of experience.

BUT....

'From the time Barack Obama was sworn in as a United States Senator, to the time he announced he was forming a Presidential exploratory committee, he logged 143 days of experience in the Senate.

That's how many days the Senate was actually in session and working. After 143 days of work experience, Obama believed he was ready to be
Commander In Chief, Leader of the Free World .

... 143 days.

We all have to start somewhere. The senate is a good start, but after 143 days, that's all it is - a start.

AND, strangely, a large sector of the American public is okay with this
and campaigning for him. We wouldn't accept this in our own line of
work, yet some are okay with this for the President of the United States of
America ?

Come on folks, we are not voting for the next American Idol!

Please, please forward this before it's too late!!!!

An email from this guy proves his point?

I'm mean come on he sounds just like
somebody else that knows everything and thinks that nobody else's opinions matter.
All because he has had different experiences through life.

It was forwarded to me; I saw the list of TO: recipients. It's well into the hundreds. It was written up by someone, forwarded on, and again and again, until 10 forwards later it made it to me and 20+ other contacts, most of whom I know to be blue-collar anti-Liberals - mechanics, laborers, etc., - who absolutely cling to God and guns. This is what they do - they forward this type of nonsense, and the "you're a great friend - forward this on to 10 other friends or Chuck Norris will punch your baby" kind of e-mails.

It's mere existence highlights the fear present within these people; the fervor with which it's been forwarded along is the evidence that these fears are widespread. This is what they're reduced to. "He's only been around 143 working days in Congress, and that's not much if you compare it to completely irrelevant lines of work with which blue collar people can relate, and we have nothing else bad to say about him, but he's popular for some reason, which highlights how stupid everyone else in the country must be, and don't vote for him".

So there are no inaccuracies in the message of the email?

And you're pissed off because some hard working Americans are passing it along?

Thus they are in fear!

Of course there are inaccuracies - the assertion is that you're only "working" as a congressman if you're on Capitol Hill with congress in session. Less subtly, that the "job" of President is something for which A) licensure is required, B) an exam must be passed, C) the execution of said duties are repetitive and static in nature - the implication made by drawing analogies to the other vocations they called out; completely fallacious.

And I'm not pissed off about it; I think it's a remarkable example of just how desperate Republicans are becoming to keep Obama OUT OF office - something very different indeed from being desperate to make sure McCain gets INTO office.
