Glad to see you and the family got to safety in good order. Let us know if stuff is required. We can always trailer the building supplies from up here that will be in short supply in your area.

Lucky miss for everyone. The surge was about 6 feet less than originally projected because it hit a few miles from original target. That MIGHT mean that the refineries are not fully involved. On a National level that is good news.

On a local level I am not sure how much Galveston saved. And I really hope they do something about the 10s of thousands of folks that decided to stay and now require extraordinary effort to be removed for their safety. That was just stupid. Don't people learn anything?

And I think I have proof that there is not a god. When waves knocked Geraldo Rivera down on live TV, they didn't suck him out to sea.

Thanks to all for your wishes of good luck and concern.

My house is on the opposite side of the lake near Kemah, about 50 yds from Clear Lake's usual shore line - it's about 50% destroyed. My boat dock ended up in my front driveway. Had five ft of water on the first floor, spent the last three days shoveling mud, ripping out walls and throwing half my life in the trash. There is no power, and there will probably be none for a month. I will be posting pics soon. Nassau Bay, Kemah, Seabrook, Clear Lake Shores, and La Porte are easily described as like, totally destroyed if they were within 200 yds of the water, and an utter mess everywhere else. The entire area got hit by a magnified storm surge because of the constriction effect of the bayous. The area shown on the far right of the map, where 146 connects the Kemah area to the NASA area, turned into a massive lake even before the hurricane arrived, and the ledt eyewall of the hurricane ran right over it. In the area bounded by NASA Rd 1 (aka FM 528) , FM 2094 and SH 146, the destruction in that area is breathtaking. It is pretty much under martial law. The hurricane's left eyewall followed 146 right up into Baytown, destroying much residential property, but sparing the refineries, which have a lot to repair but are in pretty good shape considering.

Managed to move the Benz and my three motorcylces to a parking garage in Nassau Bay before the storm hit, and then got to watch three days of TV describing Nassau Bay as one of the worst hit areas. Finally got thru the army of cops and media and got in there yesterday, and all my stuff was fine, the floodwaters reached to the bottom of my tires, on the second floor of the parking garage- the entire first floor was flooded, which means they had like 10 ft of water in the town. Luckily, the surrounding office buildings protected the garage from the 100 mph winds, and all was well with all, not even a scratch.

My friend has been located, he is, believe it or not, doing interviews on local TV about his experiences. He thinks he might "get lucky" with the TV reporter.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address
