Ditto with mudslides and fires.
You failed to mention the fires, mudslides and other notes from Mother E telling you to GTFO.

Knowing that FTL is smart enough to have his ass out of the way, I will just ask this rhetorically. Exactly WHY are folks so interested in continuing this reliance on OIL when all it takes is one or two of these guys to completely turn the supply/demand calculus upside down? This evening is the perfect reason we do not need Drill, Drill, Drill. Grasp the economics not the hope for instant gratification.

Now just hope FTL is incorrect or we could have $5.00 gas by Monday.

Here is the Exxon Baytown refinery at the NW side of the bay. It appears to be about 4KM X 5KM in size, plus loading infrastructure.

Let's just hope this doesn't flood. k

Galveston, Baytown , Kingwood are on the center path. It is a near certainty to flood.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
it isexpected to intensify to Category 3 level, with winds between 111 and 130 mph, by the time it makes landfall in the wee hours of Saturday. Moreover, its massive size--500- miles wide, seemingly occupying most of the Gulf--isexpected to set off a powerful storm surge that could exceed 20 feet in some areas. That could devastate low-lying areas, and send a rush of water up the Houston Ship Channel toward the state's largest city.

200 mi away and it's already flooding. It's a giant one.
Repairing eroded beaches is basically throwing money away.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Despite Galveston's 17-foot seawall, low-lying areas began flooding Friday morning, when Ike's eye was 200 miles and about 16 hours away.
...
Damage from beach erosion could take years to repair.
...
Gov. Rick Perry asked President Bush to declare an emergency for 88 counties expected to bear the brunt of Ike's assault, allowing full reimbursement for storm-related costs.

When storms batter islands, taxpayers pick up tab - USATODAY.com
Fragile barrier islands from Texas to New England take a beating, especially during hurricane season, that cause their beachfronts to wash away and gradually return with the tides. The shape of their sandy shores shifts over time but the islands survive, if left alone.

Yet authorities spend large sums to "fix" them by replenishing sand and other measures, mindful of their appeal to tourists and of the multimillion-dollar beachfront homes along their shores.
...
"I hear a lot of people say you'd have to be crazy or stupid to build on the oceanfront, and it's not crazy because people are making a lot of money doing it," said Rob Young, a coastal development expert at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C.

"The crazy people are the federal taxpayers who are willing to subsidize that economy."
...
Young points to Dauphin Island, Ala., where Hurricane Gustav washed away a new sand berm, 10-feet high and 14,000-feet long, that completed last year to replace the old buffer destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The sand barrier, build to protect resort homes on the island's west end, cost $3.6 million that came mostly from FEMA disaster funds.

This is a seriously dangerous storm. Hope FTL and the others I work with in the Houston area (Sugar Land, Conroe) are safe! Jim

This does, indeed, look serious. I wish you all luck.

Reports on FOX are now estimating CAT 4 winds (or thereabouts) at the higher elevations such as the high rise towers in Houston, they expect possibly considerable damage.
