It is indeed academic, and I don't have the time or inclination now either. Suffice to say though, we'd let our own economy self-destruct before we'd cut them off. HEY!

True dat. I heard a number thrown around a short while back (don't know what it is now) of about $21K per Israeli man, woman and child from U.S. taxpayer dollars. I have asked this question on this very forum several times before, generally directed toward those who support this status quo. It remains unanswered.

What is it exactly that I'm getting for my money here? What is the ROI?

People did not have extra cash to put aside in those years. Many didn't even have indoor plumbing and passed down cloths from child to child [and that was the MIDDLE CLASS]. That ability to start saving came about with the institution of Savings Bonds [another Government Program] and the boom economy of the post WW2 era. Then, Government did NOT raise the rates on SSA for the very reasons you mention. They incented folks to save on their own and use SSA as a SUPPLEMENT. And that is how it is treated even today. Most folks would not even consider the $850-1200 monthly as a "retirement" but for some folks, especially those who only were making small wages for most of their lives, that is all they do have.

And remember, YOU contribute to SSA, it is not a government gift. It is not society providing for retirees, it is the retiree drawing from THEIR account. It is, in many ways, their savings account [a poor one, but a savings account nonetheless]
You have a different view than I do on what is a necessity. Being "middle class" is not a necessity. Having enough food to eat and a dry place to sleep is pretty much all anyone needs.

The SSA was a pretty good way to bail out those who were not prepared for the depression. That's about all it was.

I have lived on far less than $800 a month.

I would rather contribute to my own investing instead of having big brother handle it for me.

People have been saving for their own retirement since Adam & Eve. Haven't you ever heard of bringing things into the storehouse so there will be enough to meet your needs?
