well .... he was going off on major news organizations being funded and owned by large corp. or individuals who are in it to make a profit.
Period.
He said, all you have to do is look at how much fluff, celebrity news, cooking segments and all the filler stuff that goes into news programming lately.
We aren't allowed to get pure news, biased or unbaised.
He went on to say that it becomes detrimental to do pieces on hard news when it'll be alienating sponsors/friends/corporate allies of the owners.
Lastly, he mentioned that European news gives a much more bleak and brutal REAL view of the news .. They know more about the real happenings in the USA than we do!
Kind of sad , don't you think?
Rather has a show on Mark Cuban's HDNet.

While he didn't address his own failures, he did nail it pretty specifically on the current state of broadcast journalism. Way to much fluff. When Headline News decided to drop NEWS in the evening and replace it with Grace, Hollywood and Beck they ruined their mission and their point for being. They "ASSUME" that folks only want news at a certain time.

We, as Americans have become way too uninformed. You can see it on this forum [although this group is better than most] and you see it in the choices of viewing. While escapism is good, even necessary for the brain, escapism at the expense of knowledge and understanding of your world's surroundings is just dangerous. Critical Thinking skills have diminished for so many.

Much of that blame lies directly in the lap of the media.

^ He's very smart and very funny, but far too biased to serve in such a capacity.

He's got an acid side that grates on you, it comes from a true hatred of the Right Wing Echo Chamber after he did a short stint on ABC news. He needs to contact me for an appointment to attend FTLE's important "The Use of Suave Delivery as a Method of Politic Discourse and Polite Persuasion" seminar. All of you on this forum are invited to attend as well, for a nominal fee, except for you shit fucking right wing rectal worms.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

I used to make fun of European dead pan news delivery but these wacked out superstars no matter which side of the fence are out of hand. Olbermann seriously gave me the creeps. He seems dangerous and far too committed.

Funny stuff. Years ago and long before cable, I used to come home shit-faced at 4 am and the only people up were farmers and stoners. I'd watch this guy talk about soy bean futures and laugh my ass off. He had a particularly jivey delivery honed from years of doing radio. I'm sure GS remembers. Fucker made the hall of fame and apparently is still alive.

There's commentary, and there's reporting. Hannity, Coulter, O'Reilly, Olbermann, Matthews; they are all commentators and should never be confused with reporters. PMSNBC blurred the lines and got caught. When networks have commentators masquerade as reporters, things get ugly.

Dan Rather got caught up in that whole "reporters are now the stars, we're the news" thing that developed in the 80's in the same era as the movies "Network" and "Broadcast News." FTL nails it above.
