'nother (mostly) True Story
Yesterday, I was driving home in the Avalon and stopped at the head of the left lane at a red light near BWI Airport. Two lanes crossed the intersection with the right lane ending very quickly just beyond the light. I saw a red C6 Corvette coming up behind me and suddenly swing over into the right lane. As it cruised to a stop, I noticed the youngish (fading a bit) blond driver chatting with her out of view passenger.
Now, I am intimately familiar with the timing of this particular light due to the combining of the lanes and the fact that I come home this way every night and frequently deal with this type of trouble. I nonchalantly depressed the "POWER" button on my dash, changing the automatic tranny shift points to the sport mode. Traction control was off. As the last electron was draining from the amber light of the cross traffic, I dropped the hammer on the pedal and got the hole shot on her as my car leapt from the line like caged animal suddenly unleashed.
I could see her laughing as she passed me halfway through the intersection.
All in all, I had no problem with that. She had a Corvette. I had a Toyota. My issue came up once the road narrowed to one lane where she slowed to a leisurely pace. What was the point? I ask you. WTF was the point?
I followed her down the street and she signaled to turn onto the same street that I usually turn at which leads to another traffic light. I, however, did NOT turn this day. Instead, I made the next right and got to the same street but controlled by a stop sign instead of a light.
I gave the finger to the old woman I cut off as I blew through the stop sign and hung a sharp right, flooring it all the way to the intersection where I had the green light! As I slowed to turn left, I could see her still waiting at the red light in her hot red rocket car and as I regained my position in front of her, I realized that she did not recognize my nondescript Japanese car that had just out dueled her and if she had, I knew...
She wouldn't have given a shit.
