This increases the chances of reinclusion ten-fold.
Got it.

The sense of entitlement is palpable... not "possible gold medal" even though the other team is an equal.

They're hoping someone will have a soft spot - The Boston Globe
Sadly, each game in these Olympics is both a step toward a gold medal ...

How can it be Japan? Is that what you're asking? Softball has a peculiar way of doing things. The semis consist of a game between seed No. 1 and seed No. 2 and a game between Nos. 3 and 4. The winner of 1-2 goes to the gold-medal game. The loser of 1-2 plays the winner of 3-4 for the right to play for the gold. As always, just remember that we are just humble Americans trying to deal with the funny little ways of international sport.
Since 2004, Japan had beaten the US team six times.

Not every round is an elimination round. Happens in soccer tournaments all the time. Look up "group play". At home.

I think the real answer is that the IOC was so tired of us kicking everyone's ass at softball, they kept crutching the rules to help other teams. When that failed (until yesterday), they took softball off the schedule. Maybe now that Japan won, it'll go back on. Sooner or later Jenny Finch is going to retire so her husband can split her like a log and pump out more babies than a slutty mormon. Then everyone else can win.
