I also think they are skilled at figuring out how to spin a given issue in order to resonate with the largest number of people. The oil drilling is a good example. They're unencumbered by concerns about accuracy or veracity; they're purely political. What approach will work best; that is the only consideration. And they have a peculiar insight into the workings of the uninformed mind; why that is, I will not speculate at the moment. Of course the Dems are political too, they're just not so good at it lately.
As I've mentioned before, politics--like advertising--is not about fooling the smart people. It's about fooling the most people.
