I haven't done enough research or care not to: CVT is neat but I think they're only available with front wheel drive models (Audi has a specific name for that, as with everything else they offer), correct?
Where I live, Quattro is a must especially in winter, but with torrential downpours we're experiencing this summer, Quattro is really paying its dividends.
Mileage is not as great compared to CVT models and the fact that we're in hilly area does not help when it comes to daily driving (21mpg avg, formidable still), but whenever we take longer drives, our A4 Avant can easily stretch to 31mpg with a little care (no jackrabbit starts, use cruise control, and no hard braking).
In short, we love our Audi too.
You're right about the CVT wrt quattro... it's only avail w/FWD and I think they call it 'multitronic' for no good reason. It's not likely to appeal to serious driving enthusiasts really because it's very much of a slushbox in operation. But, that said, you can modulate it for incredible mileage around town. With minor attention it stays around 2200rpm no matter what you're doing. Just won't win any drag races.
It never snows where I am and lately it doesn't even rain so I don't miss the AWD. But yeah you would need it.
The new A5 is awesome imho but the rear side windows don't go down. So my girl couldn't put her head out of the window. No go
