First color photo of an automobile...

Bear will probably know more about this Russian triphoto taking method than I but seeing the photo(s) in color can't help but elevate the understanding of the late 19th and early 20th century life.

First color photo ever taken and yes she isn't quite the Mona Lisa. Amazing how contemporary it looks even though it is from the 1880's.

Actually, the first color photo ever taken was of a Tartan Ribbon by photographer, Thomas Sutton, in 1861.

First color photograph taken by photographer Thomas Sutton under direct supervision of James Clerk Maxwell (nineteen century mathematician) - the famous author of Maxwell Equations.

Maxwell discovered that color photographs could be formed using red, green, and blue filters. He had the photographer Thomas Sutton photograph a tartan ribbon three times, each time with a different color filter over the lens. The three images were developed and then projected onto a screen with three different projectors, each equipped with the same color filter used to take its image. When brought into focus, the three images formed a full color image. The three photographic plates now reside in a small museum at 14 India Street, Edinburgh, the house where Maxwell was born.
