McCain was no dunce a few short years ago. He may never have been as smart as Obama, but he was certainly far more coherent during his 2000 presidential candidacy than he seems now. Whether that difference reflects the strain of the current campaign, the passage of time, or a combination of factors is difficult to surmise.
The greatest tragedy to befall America since Pearl Harbor was the nomination of George Bush over John McCain in 2000. McCain would have been the best of the lot to deal with 9-11, instead we got the oil company's personal rat boy.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
