Gunman critically wounds 7 in Tennessee church
(CNN) -- Detectives in Knoxville, Tennessee were questioning a man suspected of shooting and critically wounding seven people in a "horrendous" attack at a Unitarian church Sunday morning, a police spokesman said.
The shooting was reported at 10:18 a.m. Sunday at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, Deputy Police Chief Bill Roehl said. The suspect was taken into custody shortly after police arrived and was being questioned at the church, Roehl said.
"To our knowledge right now, he is the lone suspect in this case," Roehl said.
The seven gunshot victims were taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, just across the Tennessee River from the church, said Capt. Brent Seymour, a Knoxville Fire Department spokesman. About 12 others were treated for minor injuries at the church, he said. Map ¬Ľ
The church was scheduled to stage a children's production of the musical "Annie" on Sunday morning,
but all of the wounded appeared to be adults, Seymour said.
A woman who answered the phone at the church after the shooting would not comment, citing investigators' requests. But Roehl said many of those still at the church were "very calm" as detectives went over the sanctuary-turned-crime scene.
"It's terrible that you come to church do worship and something like this occurs," he said. "It's very horrendous."
Charles Frye, who lives on the same street as the church, said he was walking his dog when he saw the ambulances outside the church.
"It is hard to believe," said Frye, who is not a church member . "It is a great congregation. There are lawyers and professors of University of Tennessee who go there."
