Obama scraps visit to wounded troops

BERLIN (AP) — Sen. Barack Obama scrapped plans to visit wounded members of the armed forces in Germany as part of his overseas trip, a decision his spokesman said was made because the Democratic presidential candidate thought it would be inappropriate on a campaign-funded journey.
The spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said Thursday that Obama made his decision out of respect for the servicemen and women, but Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign immediately criticized the move.

"Barack Obama is wrong. It is never inappropriate to visit our men and women in the military," said Brian Rogers, a spokesman for the Republican contender.

Obama's decision raised a number of questions because the visit, which had been scheduled for Friday, never appeared on the schedule of events distributed to reporters who are accompanying him on his travels.

The first word from the campaign about its existence was Gibbs' statement.

Obama had been planning to go to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany before a flight to Paris. Gibbs said the stop was canceled because Obama decided "it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign."

We have entered The Looney Season when no utterance or action or inaction is free of political implication.

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and thats what I intend to reverse.

That was a bonehead decision he'll pay for in the campaign run-up to the election. Let's see, for starters, it was OK to spend campaign money talking to Germans, but not to our wounded soldiers? Picture that bandaged Marine in the bed, saying, "You mean one of our presidential candidates would meet with the Germans but not even come by here to say, "Thank you? Citizen of the World, my bleeding ass. Where's my absentee ballot?"

Read today that the military favored his visit IF he left his political entourage and photographers outside of the gate.

Given those odious and burdensome restrictions, Barak Hussein Obama declined the opportunity to visit wounded soldiers and instead, worked-out in the gym at the Ritz Carleton.

This can be muddled with Democrat nuance, but it boils down to the fact that DoD wouldn't allow BHO to take his press entourage into the hospital where he could get some pictures of him with wounded vets, which was the purpose of the visit. He could go himself with one aide. He chose not to, thus making it a campaign stunt by default.

To B.O.'s credit, I do believe he did visit Walter Reed Army Medical Center once after he was elected Senator.

Thank goodness McCain hasn't used visits to Iraq as photo ops.

I remember that time where he walked through Baghdad with complete safety and no protection. Well, except for the two Cobras, 100 guards and ballistic vest that he "said" he didn't wear but was somehow photoshopped on every photograph taken.

A bit of a double standard but, that's OK. Both Obama and McCain got good press during Obama's trip.
