As I’m sure you know, an embassy is - by international law - the sovereign territory of the nation it represents. Their conquest of the U.S. embassy, therefore, was an invasion of the sovereign territory of the United States. An act of war by any measure !. If any other American president had been in office at that time numerous Iranian military installations would have been attacked at the very least. Carter claimed that if had he done so he probably would have won re-election. He said, however, his decision to show forbearance saved many Iranian and American lives. But that looks ridicules today.
What followed this has been a spate of more emboldened terrorism often sponsored by the Iranian government and more and more outrages rhetoric. When Ahmadinejad claims, for example, that the holocaust did not occur, that Israel should be obliterated and then embarks on a nuclear weapons program seemingly to fulfil that wish. It is hard to have an “overblown” reaction to such things. I wonder if Iran succeeds in the nuclear destruction of Israel and thus creates a second holocaust they will someday deny that occurred as well, if we let them.
Did the US overreact to September 11th? No it just attacked the wrong country, Try to see the events of that day from this point of view. Those attacks killed more Americans than Pearl Harbour; which precipitated American entry into a war in which we killed over two million Japaneese. You would have to go back to their civil war in the nineteenth century to find such a large number of casualties resulting from a single act on US soil. In short such an act of violence was unprecedented in our living memory. Unlike at Pearl Harbour, however, September 11th principly targeted civilians.
There exists a school of thought which claims that our conflict with the Muslim world is not a clash between civilizations but a clash between civilization and barbarism, between the Enlightenment and the Dark Ages, between reason and superstition, between those who would treat women respectfully and those who treat women as property. I have always resisted such ideas but it is becoming increasingly difficult to do so here. I see the antagonism only increasing , were to next an American flag over the Kabul Mosque? A Mosque in place of the Whitehouse?. Ahmadinejad should be taken straight to Guantanamo bay upon his arrival in the US and face a military tribunal.

I can only view his visit as a second cry for help, he does not want to go down Sadams path. I dont see him converting any Americans.

"I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend, if you have one."
- George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill.

"Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second ... if there is one."
- Winston Churchill, in response.
