That was an amazing part of the Reagan "reduction" of Government. He laid off thousands of folks but found that the requirements remained. Simply hired contractors to do the work - usually at higher total costs.

Best example I personally know is my cousin who managed the data facilities at Vandenburg. Budget cuts came in 1986. He RETIRED, came back the next morning, got a new badge made with a contractor logo instead of USAF. He RETIRED again from the contractor job two years ago. 20 years as a contractor doing the same work he had done for the AF, at near triple the pay.

Reducing the size of government is fine but it pays to think first.

Unfortunatly that kind of crap is not confined to the federal gov't. I have worked for more than 1 tech company that had layoffs, general severance packages, and 2 weeks later hired back a number of the people they just laid off. This time as contractors making significantly more.

That's true, only if you don't factor in federal fringe benefits, federal job protection & federal retirement. Since contractors do not get federal fringe & retirement & job protection they can be let go at the end of a contract or a new contract can be competed.

I happen to know that we taxpayers pay about 20% - 30% overhead for contractors. We pay a bit over 30% overhead (fringe & retirement) for a fed. Additionally, we pay the fed retiree until he dies and then a lesser amount to the survivor.

I assume you do full cost accounting before you submit a bid. Fed agencies do too (Or should). If the one you contract with does not, then do the taxpayer a favor and report them.

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and that’s what I intend to reverse.
