To be honest, this is the first I'm hearing about it, but I did a quick search and read about it. I still can't draw a conclusion or opinion because I don't know the details.

Nailed my point exactly . . . the wrong direction, of course, is increasing socialism.

You ask pedestrian questions and expect me to expend effort beyond the pedestrian in response. That's not playing fair.

I'll just bet you have a computer right there at your well-manicured fingertips and can google with the best of them. Even so I'll give you a couple of keywords: Libertarian philosophy. Now go forth and google. If you have trouble understanding anything on which you want my particular perspective, provide a link & question and I'll work with you on it.

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and that’s what I intend to reverse.

My main issue that started this is Gridlock. THAT is what the main concern is and that is what has to not occur. There is just too much at stake.

What you write is absolutely correct for reducing the Debt which is the primary flag that the system is working and getting smaller. Right now we are at $3T annually, up from $2T just 4 years ago. That "growth" has to stop.

Paring back the Military and cutting those costs will be a nice Trillion in reduction [plus we might just piss a few less people off at the same time]

Social Security/Medicare is where the big problem is going to be in the short term. I think the boomers are going to live longer and take up more of those resources than anyone expected. That HAS to be addressed NOW. There can't be baby steps on that one.
That's intriguing . . . I liked GS's post as well, but I'm not sure you captured the whole point. If I'm not missing something, he's advocating a controlled transition away from the socialism that is many of our social programs. Social Security and Medicare are clearly the toughest eggs to crack, primarily because people pay into them while they work and clearly should expect benefits when they retire, but it is built on a pyramid scheme that the top is getting as wide as the base. It is a prime example of why the government shouldn't get into the business of trying to take care of the citizens, the math always looks good in the beginning (ie - we'll take a few bucks off of everyone working and take care of these old people with it), then it turns against us. How would you fix it? Grow it? Take it away from some who've also paid into it (ie - use some standard to determine who has paid but doesn't need it)? I'm not being trite, as I've wondered how to fairly work ourselves outta that one and haven't come up with an answer.

^ Yes, that's true, but the government does have a responsibility to take care of those folks who paid into social security their whole lives, and will soon be relying on it for income. Step one, pull the military back onto U.S. soil to fund SS with the savings. Step two, start weaning folks off of SS through privatization legislation and prorated payouts. Step three, eliminate SS altogether. It will take a generation or more.
