Best Bets: The Art of Barbeque

The name says it all. In Oklahoma, barbecue isnâ€™t something you do. Itâ€™s something you discuss, feel in your bones and, most importantly, you eat.
For Oklahomans, barbecue is an art, and itâ€™s hard to find a place where that practice is more eloquently preached than the annual â€śArt of Barbeque,â€ť sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa.
For the uninitiated, hereâ€™s the lowdown: The fun starts at 6 p.m. Friday with free concerts from Mary Cogan and the Midlife Crisis Band. Barbecue will be available from Stone Mill BBQ and Steakhouse both Friday night and all day Saturday.
Saturday is the day for connoisseurs. More than 65 teams will compete for top honors in categories including ribs, brisket, chicken, pork butt and steak. The public can dig in to this ensemble beginning at 11:15 a.m. Saturday. Sampling goes until 2 p.m. and costs $10 per person, including a drink.
If youâ€™re more interested in quantity than quality, the ribeating contest takes place at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The â€śArt of Barbequeâ€ť is on the University of Oklahoma- Tulsa Schusterman Campus at 41st Street and Yale Avenue.
