Wouldn't it be easier to just switch back to horses?

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Boone Doggle

Boone Pickens may be a fine man, and has played a colorful and useful role on the American stage for decades. But his "energy plan," which he's spending a fortune to promote on cable TV, is not a plan.

Asserting that something would be good to do is not "a plan." Saying how to do it is "a plan." By this standard, what the legendary oil man is devoting $58 million to pitch hardly amounts to a decent slogan...

....In fact, Mr. Pickens's "plan" bears a family resemblance to John Kerry's 2004 "energy independence plan," ....

,,,No: As Mr. Pickens says, we can't drill our way out of the dilemmas of living in the world. But drilling is one of many things we can do that are worth doing. Over time, the price mechanism and technology will tell us how to harness the energy that is infinite around us. There's the sun, the tides, geothermal and nuclear -- energy is not in short supply; only know-how is. And a shortage of know-how is a problem that our society, as long as its basic incentives remain intact, is constantly solving every single day.

I just re-read this entire thread. Would someone explain to me why it is only the folks on the right wing of this board who have negative things to say about wind energy plans?

How is that F'ing possible that opinions on a new Energy Technology can break down on POLITICAL lines?

Folks on the Left show examples of where it is working, where it is actually in process, actually generating power, contributing to the grid and diminishing a reliance on OIL.

Folks on the Right say
  • "it is just another business decision",
  • "Pickens stands to reap a financial windfall if his plan is put into action."
  • "But this dude has a real technical problem. The wind always blows, but not always in the same place, so no one can really depend on it for consistent power. So at times you might generate more kws than you need and at other times be sadly lacking. The likely answer is a fossil fuel back-up or, for you dreamers, gigantic batteries, which of course don't exist. Good luck with this one."
  • "When they find that good intentions didn't make good energy who will clean up the mess of huge fucking windmills on our landscape?"
  • "Dream on! It isn't going to happen in our lifetime..."
  • "Don't hold your breath..."
It is just so many nattering nabobs of negativism. Spiro and Pat would be proud.

I like this one best. "Dream on! It isn't going to happen in our lifetime..."

Total U.S. installed wind power capacity now stands at 19,549 MegaWatts (MW). Right now the US has just over a Million Megawatts capacity [if I am reading the EIA chart correctly - ED?] so wind is a small adjunct source at this point. But, unlike coal and oil, it is not a finite source and is clean and growing in size/development. That can't be said for our current oil/coal based producers.

So how has an emerging technology that has such potential [20% of ALL power generation by 2030 at CURRENT growth] managed to get such hatred from the Political Right. When did Wind Energy kick Bushie's puppy?

It is because right wing nut jobs all have small brains. Otherwise they would have wised up back in 2004. To spot a RWNJ, they usually demonstrate one or all of these signs:

They love to drink Kool-aide.
They claim God talks to them and that God is on their side.
They sell fear, the only thing they know how to sell.
They are not tied to oil companies, they Are the oil companies.
They advocate the boderless United States.
They want to outsource everything, including nursing jobs.
They love to cook their books.
They all learned from Enron and World Com.
They want to abolish the Middle Class.
They have no moral (even while God is indeed talking to them).
They are all goodie two shoes.
Their closets are full of skeletons.
They are usually young and misled (and sometimes just plain idiot), but masquerade as mature and rich.
They are closed minded.
They are half a step from being radical.

Wind energy can be stored hydro-kinetically.
This is already done at night by power companies with lower cost/kw plant power to be used during the daytime peak.

So McBare, do you want discuss the overhyping of this proposal, the technical limitations that dampen its promise, or your surprise that those of us on the right actually think about this stuff?

Why don't you start with T-Bones pitch that buying oil is a $700 billion dollar "wealth transfer?" Find some truth in that, then we can move on to giant batteries.
