^ Cooking time has *nothing* to do with the fuel, beyond the 10 minutes you might save getting a charcoal grill up to temperature. If you're cooking something that takes 3-4 hours, gas vs. charcoal doesn't enter in to it.
Picked up a new book today, called "Paul Kirk's Championship Barbecue". Pretty interesting stuff so far. He entered his first competition in 1981, with a Hasty Bake (the same grill I have), and a Weber Kettle. At that competition, he took first place in chicken, and 2nd in ribs, after getting a very late start. The guy knows his stuff. Even if he is from Kansas.
