What is the difference? The government saw a need to state a policy, whether it was mandated seat belts, child proof caps, lead free gas, CFLs, Automatic weapons, Lawn Jarts and legislated use/non-use within the confines of one if its legislative acts or regulatory bodies.

You see lowflow toilets or CFLs as different as they have a political overtone right now [somehow Gore is involved] but they are all still part of the myriad of federal regulations that mandate slipstreamed changes into our lives.

On CFLs and Low Flow Toilets

A thought came up this evening while I was clipping roots for the foundation of the garage.

Some folks balk at the notion that the government can mandate just what lightbulbs they can buy. Some folks balk at the requirement to have low flush toilets. It is as if the government was trying to make rules just to infringe on the individual rights.

Is that really the case?

With CFLs, the reality is that 1Billion replaces tungsten bulbs will save a good chunk of energy. Lights in houses account for about 15-20% of all household power requirements. Energy Star estimates that when the conversion is complete, the load on the power grid will be lessened, reducing demand for increased services by power companies. That is EVERYONE'S rights and expenses and utility bills.

So while the initial effect is personal, the cumulative effect is very much in favor of helping the entire pool of people. As one saves, it contributes to the savings of everyone. I am trying to figure out the bad in that.

Good argument. Now let's take it just a little further and suggest that it is in everybody's best interest to have the same kind of car. If the government would get into the car business and mass produce a single fuel efficient model for all Americans, we will all benefit in more ways than I can imagine. All non-government cars can be phased out and outlawed over the next dozen years or so. Dramatically less expensive vehicles that all working mechanics can service flawlessly with 100% parts interchangeability, reduced insurance costs, increased resale, a substantial national employment need, etc, etc. This is a no-brainer without any downside at all. Of course, businesses and special needs vehicles can be assigned on the basis of demonstrated need and government permits. How 'bout it?

Somehow, the energy efficient car could be melded with population control edicts. For example, in my area a lot of folks use SUVs to haul lots of kids everywhere. With your idea, everyone owning, say a Prius style, kids in car seats will be limited to two, so the family will be limited to four members. Voila! Of course, the single mom in the innercity could have three kids. Makes such perfect sense.
