Nah, just trying to keep him honest. It's too easy to answer a question/issue with "you are motivated by your political/industrial/religious/etc. affiliation, therefore your question isn't relevant." There are many who do, and he's far better than that.
How about, "You're a Nazi"? That's as close to wit and reason as some folks are capable of. Oh, then there's "neocon", the latest bugbear of the intellectually lazy or deficient.
If one cannot use reason, one can always use invective. Put a label on a thing one doesn't like then dismiss the thing. Pretty soon all things we don't like have the label and we can dismiss them all.
It begins with the word, "All ..." and you then insert the label, and follow it with "... want to ..." or "...have done ...". After a while you can pick the theme from the post and you needn't read anymore. You have the answer the rest is all dressing.
The reverse also works: Put words in the mouths of others that they never said and perhaps never thought. That one is trickier to pull off and so fewer people attempt it. There are a few who are quite good at it.
None of these rhetorical methodologies are founded upon the concept that reasonable people can disagree and through rational conversation, come to a common understanding. These methods are based on a desire to belittle the opposing view to justify ignoring it, rather than learn from it.
