I know my home, it's my turf. In this world, there are 'flying' items other than bullets fired from a gun.

It is a highly unlikely scenario for all of us, but to be aware of what resources that are available to tip the scale to one's favor is knowing half the battle.

It is people who have that drive and will who either threaten their lives or keep others safe.

The internal motivation and discipline is what differentiates the cruel murderer or megalomaniac from the dedicated law officer or soldier. Is it arrogance to align ones self clearly on one side in opposition to the other? If you say so.

I am pleased that you chose Churchill over Chamberlain. I would choose the same too. Arrogance is not about alignment and opposition, however, having said that, I have issues with the following statement you made:

"They are safe because people like me keep life safe for them."

I don't owe my sense of security to you, and even the Chambelains of this world will protect their own family with deadly force if the need arises.

hope this clarifies.

Read it again. You owe me nothing.

Hope this clarifies.

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and thatís what I intend to reverse.

By coincidence, I finally got to see Hotel Rwanda, of Paul Rusesabagina's incredible story during the Rwnadan genocide last night.

Think of home invasion on a grand scale, of shielding not just his family but 1200 plus refugees from not just one or two armed intruders but an entire army of bloodthirsty Interhamwe mob and not only for one night but for what I understand as an ordeal that lasted several weeks.

I don't expect myself to follow his actions precisely in the event of a home invasion, but for me as well as those folks with trigger happy fingers bent on blasting the brains of an intruder all over one's own living room wall as if it could one day become 'hunting trophy', his actions give us something to think about.

You can check in but you can never leave.

So you would throw stuff at home invader more substantial than pleadings and prayers? Would it be something capable of inflicting grave bodily harm?

I do understand the position you take. Spacial awareness it critical. Having achieved Black Belt back in the 70s [I do assume very faded skills by now] which included some instruction in both Tae Kwon Do and Kenpo and also a former field instructor for concealed carry permits, I am very aware that the time between identification of a problem and solving the problem is very short.

With a time frame for decisions that is so short [often in the under 3-5 second range] and the conditions so violent, the choices of solutions are very limited and the variables are so dependent on the opponent.

Since your only decision is to STOP the violence against your family ASAP, your window of opportunity, under extreme stress is limited. So, even though you are on your own turf and in your sphere, insure that, in the highly unlikely event something does happen, those 3-5 seconds are very well spent.

there is a hardbound Gideon Brothers Bible I 'borrowed' from some airport hotel over a decade ago in my nightstand drawer that will fulfill both the prayers and bodily harm requirements.

Brings a whole new meaning to the term 'Bible basher'

Sorry to sound banal:

It is much better to have a gun and not need one than need one and don't have one.

And quoting Al: "You can get more with a nice word and a gun than you can with a nice word".

You can't argue with statistics. You're more likely to be shot in a house with a gun, than in one without.
