Pennies are not made of pure copper it has nickle and some other metal in it as well. If it was made of pure copper it would be close. When we evaluate materials for scrap value we determine what we will have to pay for it when we need it again, plus storage handling etc.. vs. what we can get for it recycled. One of our customers is a scrap metal recycle center and gives us top dollar for everything we bring in plus a little bonus so we usually just scrap it. Not to mention it keeps him busy and gets us more work in the long run. this week we are setting up the service to feed 2 new compactors they just bought @ $250k a piece. Mainly just for extra space and fuel savings. A 50 yard dumpster not compacted will hold about 60 tons of metal. Once it gets compressed and the blocks get stacked neatly inside it they will hold 110 tons, which is there max weight otr. And when driving 3 hours one way to deliver twice a day it all adds up.
