Has the European map ever not change in any 50yr period ? Breakup is inevitable for such an unnatural union.
By "corruption and waste", might as well add extortion.
-------------------------------------------------------- the past several years, ECB monetary policy has been made for the primary benefit of the German economy; it's almost been like having the Bundesbank back again. Waiting for an ECB rate cut? When the German economy shows definitive signs of rolling over, you'll finally get one.
What does seem clear is that as it approaches age 10, the single currency experiment is facing what may be one its largest challenge: a real disconnect amongst the constituent economies that cannot be solved with a single monetary policy.
that has made the EU bureaucracy such a morass of corruption and waste.

It has changed indeed.

EU has accomodated almost all the Eastern Europe countries from the former Soviet bloc.

Their currency is up to the stratosphere, they have universal health care.

They have quite a few problems too.

As of breakup, not likely in our lifetime.

When the Euro was first circulated in 2002, 86 cent US would buy one.
Rate U.S. Dollar Bid Ask
EURUSD=X 1 Jun 23 1.5516 1.5518

The Euro looks to be well on its way in replacing the U.S. Dollar as the lead currency for the World's trade and commerce.
