I understand the decision McCain is making. He will take lobbyists money and allow 527s to Swiftboat like they did Kerry in 04 or Tennessee's Harold Ford in the 2006 Senate Race with as much money as they like all the while trying to claim some moral high ground with "only" taking the Government's $75 Million.
Nevermind that he has been having a very hard time getting fund raising to any level that would allow him to compete on a dollar to dollar basis and fear is the real deciding factor.
As posted earlier, I would have liked them both to reject lobbyist's money, reject ALL 527s hit campaigns and just spend the $75 mil each. It would allow TV to be much more enjoyable during the next four months [yes, just FOUR MONTHS!!!]. But it seems McCain is not going to play by part of that hope and Obama is not going to play by the other part. It wasn't my decision. Such is life.
You're damn right. McCain is signing on for the coming smear job. Obama has over $200 million dollars in funds that were donated in small amounts by average smucks. They have a right to see every dime spent in their behalf. The Swiftboat Express is cranking up, and they are going to try to make the election about crazy pastors and Obama's old lady. Last election, they succeeded in making the election about butt fucking and Vietnam. Anything to keep the super rich and the oil companies in power, anything to get a voter to vote against their own best interest. Well, this time they are going to get it right back.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
