Before Wifie's mom got sick which pretty much required us to be here in Lexington we asked the same questions. Where, why and when. After living in all parts of the US on contracts from Fargo to NYC to Seattle to Miami to SF to LA to Atlanta and vacationing to nearly every other place in the country we really determined that Lexington was just about as good as it got.
There are a few things we don't have but that is more than made up for by things we do have. Taxes are pretty low, as is car insurance. You can get a lot of house for the money and regional arts and entertainment are very good.

So we decided to stick around Lex and to get a little condo in Key Largo for those escape times. After a decade of flying down there six or so times a year we decided to sell it so it is now gone at a fairly nice profit. It was high enough never to have been smacked by a major hurricane or taken water.
Next thought is to find something in England/Scotland for three months a year just to better enjoy the area instead of short stays and business trips.
Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.
