Tech question: Website development and improvement (HELP)

Okay guys, here's the deal: I'm a member of the MBCA KC Section, and have known for a long time that our Website is a little long in the tooth and short on current technology and user-friendliness; and I proposed to our board that we spend a little money to bring in a Web-development pro to get us on the right track. I told them this would probably include new software and training for our Webmaster, in a turnkey arrangement where we would get full control of the site once it is set up.

The major problem w/ the site is that it is closed, making it impossible to link to anything on the site w/out having to first register and log-on frequently. I don't know of any serious sites like that in this day and age. Our Webmaster insists that it should remain closed in order to protect us from Internet bogymen, but I don't believe that makes much sense.

Though I know nothing about Website development, I am an expert at evaluating sites from an en-user point of view, and ours really stinks. In fact, I recently got a complaint from a senior MBCA national official, wanting to know why our site is PW-protected. And he strongly suggested we open it up. I saw his concerns as an opportunity to approach the board w/ a proposal to open up, but I am sure they will have a lot of questions about costs, software, etc., which I am not prepared to answer. In short, I'm looking for a defense of my proposal, and I am hoping that some of you here will be able help me out.

Here's the link to our site: http://www.kcmbca.org/

Any ideas and information will be appreciated.

You don't have a web site, what you have is an intranet. It takes about five minutes to fix that.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address

Find a member who has a Mac, and ask if you can use it for iWeb. You can have a brilliant site up and running in nothing flat. Password, shmassword. Get over yourselves.

Your current webmaster is likely afraid that his creationist website will be exposed and inundated with heretical internet bogeymen who espouse blasphemous theories of evolution and other such nonsense. As far as his website is concerned, he is the Creator, and will not allow His creation to evolve. Yes, we're still in Kansas.

First, get a new "Webmeister". If he is unable to protect the site from the wiles of the internet boogiemen with all the current technology available he most likely needs to avoid the strenuous labor of web management.

Also tell him we enjoyed the trip back to 1999. Do his Sansabelt pants from that year still fit too?

As Cigar says, get someone with a mac and go with something like iWeb or if you only have Windows folks, MS Expressions is not a bad way to go at $300. It is the Frontpage replacement and does a good job.

Go out to cnet.com for a bunch of other options.

Actually, our Webmaster just inherited the site from the Creator--who I don't believe was from Kansas--and Web development is not his forte. In fact, he said he didn't know how to open it up.
