One of my amateur pet theories is that infant sexual development happens in stages, and the presence/absence or levels of the hormones that, for example, ultimately determine the physical sex of a fetus, have an affect on sexuality.
There are lots of "shades" of masculinity and femininity, and as anyone with a working eye can tell, it crosses gender lines.
The whole part of this that I find useful is that science can be used to shut-up the imbeciles who damn one type of person or another to hell based on the belief that sexual preference is a conscious decision that every such person makes individually.
I cannot doubt that there are some confused kids, and cannot ignore stories of people who have "phases" in life where they are either gay or bi-curious...to say that every homosexual is in a "phase" is like saying every heterosexual is in a "phase". I think it's really ridiculous to discount the real probability of sexual preference being rooted in gestational physiology somehow.
