Talk Radio

Thanks to all the political chit chat that goes on in BWOT, I split my drive time between Sports Talk radio which is somewhat applicable to my job and political talk radio. Here in Baltimore, that means conservative almost exclusively. The two liberal stations in DC and Frederick don't have the signal strength to reach the antenna that is embedded in my windshield.

This is unfortunate as I would love to hear the left side as a counter balance to the steady flow from the right. Imagine reading this forum with only Jayhawk posting but no FeelTheLove. (Settle down, Bot!)

That said, there is a regular feature that comes on 680 WCBM around 7:45 AM (I can't recall the name of the segment) in which the various radio personalities listen to descriptions of three unusual and outrageous current news stories, one of which is untrue. They joke about them and then attempt to guess which one is the fake.

I try to time my drive so that I'm not in the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel during this part as I am generally able to identify the fake thanks to Robert (Jakarta Expat). The regular posting of stories about people who want to marry a bridge or high school senior pranks keep me ahead of the curve during my morning drive. Thanks, Robert.

Some days I listen to Ed Shultz, other days to Rush Limbaugh. Both shows make valid points. Everyone knows Shultz hates everyone with a 'R' by their name and Limbaugh hates the folks with 'D' next to theirs. I like to hear these extreme takes on the presidential race.

It makes me laugh to hear everyone have orgasms over the prospect Obama will be president. Limbaugh doesn't like McCain because McCain is a waffling liberal. Limbaugh stops short of advocating Republicans vote for Obama in order to help Republicans regain control of the house and senate, but you know he's thinking it.

As for Shultz, he thinks Obama will be some sort of economic savior. Maybe he will, who knows? But, Shultz's love affair with Obama is going to prevent him from seeing the true person behind the flag lapel pin. Oh, he wears one now, doesn't he?

Using the analogy of talk radio, of which I do not partake, do not miss, and find especially superficial, excessively tendentious, and of no redeeming quality, I think your characterizations of like-minded contributors on BWOT an excellent one.

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and that’s what I intend to reverse.

Strikes me that you'd be better served by spending more time listening to WYPR 88.1, instead of that other adnauseating drivel

There's a good reason why the vast majority of political talk radio is conservative. Here's a somewhat dated but nevertheless still relevant article on the subject: Boston.com / News / Boston Globe / Opinion / Op-ed / Liberal talk radio? No one will buy it

Personally, I prefer the Jim Rome show to Rush, but I find relevance in both.

Thanks, Z.

You're pretty good at this interweb thingy. Despite the Botnst's disdain, I find that informational nuggets fall out from a variety of resources. I can probably read faster than McBear but I would retain perhaps less than a tenth, at best. An hour or so a day in the car affords me the opportunity to expand my consciousness that I would not otherwise have. I may have to wade through a bunch of "swift boat bullshit" but I still find value in it.

Jay, I used to listen to Romey but they replaced his show on the local sports talk stations and I haven't heard him for a couple of years now.

Rack me. I'm out.

Now that class is over for the summer I am finding that NOT listening to the talk radio streams is unbelievingly refreshing [from both sides of the spectrum].

Once I determined just what the content of most talk radio was, I found the thought put into the written word to be so much more beneficial and informative that trying to compare the two is just not really possible. And this is coming from someone who has made a bunch of money in the broadcast media industry - I should be one of their cheerleaders.

That ability to flip on the mike and talk, as opposed to write an article, read it, revise it, have an editor review it and then submit it to print is the equivalent of "measure twice, cut once".

But I understand the need to burn time during a commute. I seldom use AM/FM on my radio. It is either XM or iPod only.
