40 Years Ago Today

Jun 6 1968
Senator Robert F. Kennedy dies at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. The Democratic lawmaker had been campaigning for his party's Presidential nomination when he was shot three times by Sirhan Bishara Sirhan.

I watched the speech live as it was broadcast from California. And then the aftermath coverage.

The parallels of 1968 and 2008 are very interesting. Seasoned veteran Senator against young idealist.

I remember coming home from school and my mom was crying her eyes out. She was pregnant with my little brother and the bugger was born the day Nixon was elected. Weird, mom hated Nixon.

I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way.

64 years ago today, this hour (their time), young men were flying across the Channel, scared shitless, prepared to jump out of perfectly good airplanes in the dark over a land unknown to them, to a fate no longer in their hands alone.

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and thatís what I intend to reverse.

~ Senator Barack H. Obama

Would that be 64 years?

So if Sirhan Bishara Sirhan did not exist/succeed, Robert F. could be elected instead of Nixon and we would live in the very different country now, yes?

I do understand.

My dad explained that he was on a boat wrapping his ammo and carton of cigarettes in condoms to in sure they were watertight as they prepared for the morning stroll on the beach.

With permeated heavy cotton fatigues to protect against gas attack and all their gear, most of those guys doubled their weight as they jumped off the Higgins boat into six feet of water. The forging that they received from the events of that week provided an amazing foundation of Americans.
