So if Sirhan Bishara Sirhan did not exist/succeed, Robert F. could be elected instead of Nixon and we would live in the very different country now, yes?
We were talking about it at dinner this evening. There would have been so many different paths.
I think the war would have ended much sooner, saving the lives of 10-15,000 soldiers and the wounding of 100,000. [those are 1969-1972 numbers only].
We would not have had Watergate and the devastating riff it tore in the fabric of the country. That was the start of the truly partisan politics that had seeds sown in 1968.
On the other hand, what would have become of China and Russia. Nixon opened up relationships with both countries [amazing that we negotiated with the enemy]. Those dialogs led to the end of the Cold War on one hand and the beginning of China's ascension as the leader of world trade just 35 years later on the other.
The inflation that strangled the Carter administration got its genesis in the Nixon administration with 10% inflation as Nixon left office and festered with Ford.
It would have been a very different America but in what ways, THAT is hard to tell.
