Maybe now - but not then. The stewardesses used to throw their bags across the back rows to reserve themselves a lie-down too.

Ever seen those reality TV shows about airports? I saw one last year taken at a US airport where a really overweight guy was pulled out of the check-in line and told he would have to pay for an extra seat. Eventually he reluctantly agreed...
